They wont let us do individual habitats or add extra heat sources or extra hides/ decorations other than whats on the planogram for the store. I currently work at a petco, and we love our animals so so much, and do the best they we can for them, but unfortunately corporate and upper big branch management has a tight grip on us. They’ll still get bothered by management for not carrying a larger stock but they won’t necessarily get written up or fired like they would if they go off plano with their habitats. The best thing that the employees can really do is order the bare minimum number of geckos at a time (six for leopard geckos,) and separate them as much as they can. There is no opportunity for them to “speak to the exo-terra rep” anyway because exo-terra doesn’t send sales representatives to any of the petcos I know. Employees aren’t allowed to use anything in their gecko enclosures aside from what you see here the only choice allowed is whether to use reptile carpet or the pre-approved brand of calcium carbonate sand as a substrate. The hides are against the glass like that because the district manager will get on the animal manager’s ass if they don’t do it that way. Independent pet stores have the freedom to make those decisions, but chains like Petco have strict guidelines and “planograms” that they enforce on employees.
